Mungindi residents advised to watch river levels

Mungindi residents have been advised to monitor heights in the Barwon River.

This follows river rises and concerns that continued upstream flows could cause the Barwon to reach a major flood level.

The Balonne Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) Chair Samantha O’Toole said the LDMG had met this afternoon and wanted to alert Mungindi residents to possible flooding.

“At this point, we have moved to ‘Lean Forward’ status,” Ms O’Toole said.

“River heights upstream of Mungindi are yet to peak and it is not yet known what the expected impact will be on Mungindi residents

“We will know more in coming days. There may not be significant problems. However, we want to err on the side of caution.

“The LDMG believes it is prudent for residents to consider what they would do in the event of significant flooding and put their plans in place.”

Ms O’Toole said residents should monitor the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) website and check in particular BOM’s flood warning for the Border Rivers
