Scam alert: bitumen bandits are in Balonne

Back

St George Police have received reports of door-to-door salespeople claiming to offer driveway repairs and bitumen laying services. This is a scam.

In some instances, these scammers are claiming to be employees of Balonne Shire Council or contractors for Council. This is, of course, false.
Council employees and contractors will never sell products or services door-to-door and will never demand upfront payments for any reason. Council employees will always be in proper uniform when visiting a resident’s property.

Council is advising all residents to be aware of these bitumen bandits and take care if they are approached by the scammers.

If a bitumen bandit comes to the door, residents should:

  • Record the conversation as evidence;
  • Report the incident to police; and
  • Report the incident to the Office of Fair Trading.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant of potential scams. Under Australian Consumer Law, door-to-door traders must advise consumers about the 10-day cooling-off period; it is illegal for them to accept payment or commence any services during this time.

Door to door traders must leave your premises if you ask, and they must not approach any residence displaying a 'do not knock' notice or sticker. Queensland residents can order a free sticker from the Office of Fair Trading website.
