COUNCIL GETTING HOOKED ON ADVENTURE TOURISM
Off the back of a string of Tourism Awards and nationally prominent media coverage from previous successful Tourism campaigns, Balonne Shire Council is set to let out the drag on its next big tourism hook.
On National Scavenger Hunt Day (24 May 2023), Balonne Shire Council will launch an Outback experience like no other with its St George Region: You’ll be Hooked tourism campaign that involves a Shire-wide scavenger hunt through its seven picturesque towns, rivers and landscapes.
The I Got Hooked on St George Region scavenger hunt will give visitors and locals alike the opportunity to go it alone or team up with family and friends, whilst immersing themselves in an unforgettable experience that showcases the region's unique natural beauty, vibrant communities, and rich history.
Balonne Shire Council Mayor Samantha O’Toole expressed excitement about the upcoming event, stating that she can't wait to showcase the Balonne Shire's charm, warm hospitality, and stunning landscapes through the I Got Hooked scavenger hunt.
“The I Got Hooked on St George Region scavenger hunt is an opportunity for people to immerse themselves in our region's natural wonders and uncover hidden gems while having a fantastic time with family and friends," she said.
“Visitors and locals alike will have the chance to unleash their inner adventurer as they take part in what promises to be an adventure-filled experience, enticing participants to explore the breathtaking Balonne region and discover its hidden treasures.
“Along the way, participants will breathe in the fresh country air, explore the vast landscapes, and enjoy the freedom of our wide-open spaces, whilst experiencing famous historic Australian pubs, homesteads and painted silos.
“They’ll also be able to take time out to meander along our inland rivers and waterways which supply endless fields of produce and some of the best inland fishing in the country – don’t forget to bring your fishing rod!
“The scavenger hunt also serves as a celebration of the Balonne Shire's resilience and recovery from recent challenges.
“By inviting locals and visitors to explore the region, the Council hopes to support local businesses and reinvigorate tourism, contributing to the ongoing growth and development of the Balonne community.”
Adventure-goers can simply follow the clues and identify the nominated landmark in each of our seven unique towns of St George, Dirranbandi, Bollon, Hebel, Thallon, Nindigully and Mungindi, which is sure to be an Outback experience like no other.
With each clue they solve, they’ll collect a colourful town Fish Token to add to the special I Got Hooked on St George Region key ring on which they can proudly display their catch.
Anyone who collects all seven tokens will not only snag the I Got Hooked on the St George Region collectable key ring as a memento of their trip, but there are also great prizes up for grabs including return flights for two people on Rex Airlines!
The Council welcomes journalists and photographers to capture the excitement, share stories of adventure, and spotlight the Balonne region's unique appeal.
The Scavenger Hunt will run from 24 May until 30 September 2023 with the winner announced at the beginning of October. Terms and conditions apply.
