BALONNE WELCOMES VITAL FUNDING FOR CASTLEREAGH HIGHWAY
Balonne Shire Council welcomes the announcement from the Queensland Government to contribute a total of $13.7 million towards betterment and reconstruction works for Castlereagh Highway from the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP) for 2023-24.
The proposed works to Castlereagh Highway include:
- $10.1 million for betterment works on Castlereagh Highway between St George and Hebel, from 2022 Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (jointly funded with the Australian Government)
- $3.6 million for reconstruction works on Castlereagh Highway between St George and Hebel, from 2022 Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (jointly funded with the Australian Government)
Balonne Shire Council Mayor Samantha O’Toole said as a sparsely populated Shire with vital industry heavily dependent on a reliable transport network this funding is warmly welcomed.
“Our region has endured more than its fair share of challenges with natural disasters over recent years and funding for betterment projects like this not only help to rebuild our region, but to build it stronger,” said Mayor O’Toole.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management Murray Watt said regional roads were often critical to accessibility for communities.
“The Albanese Government is pleased to support these reconstruction projects and is committed to doing our part to make sure drivers are safe on the roads all-year-round.”
“Betterment projects in particular mean roads and bridges are built back in more innovative ways to better withstand future damage and prevent major repair works having to be done after every weather event – which is vital in disaster-prone regions.”
Queensland’s Transport & Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said that reducing road trauma and saving lives remains one of the government's highest priorities, and this year’s QTRIP investment builds upon a legacy of constant improvement to our roads through various safety programs.
"QTRIP plays a pivotal role in unlocking economic prosperity and improving the well-being of Queensland communities,” said Minister Bailey.
"By strengthening businesses, providing vital connections, and generating employment opportunities, the government's transport network will enhance the overall quality of life for Queenslanders.”
