LOCAL DISASTER MANAGEMENT GROUP UPDATE

This is an update from the Balonne Shire's Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) meeting of 30 January 2024. Residents are asked to stay informed and monitor conditions via the Emergency Dashboard and where possible avoid travelling in affected areas.
RAINFALL EVENT
On Monday 29 January the Shire had a significant rainfall event that impacted most townships, roads and properties.
The St George Airport recorded 113mm during the rainfall event.
It is anticipated that this rainfall event across the Moonie River catchment and the Condamine Balonne catchment will cause a range of flooding issues and road closures across the Shire over the coming days.
MOONIE RIVER
MODERATE FLOODING EXPECTED AT FLINTON TUESDAY AFTERNOON
MODERATE FLOODING LIKELY AT NINDIGULLY AROUND WEDNESDAY
In the 24 hours to 6:00 am Tuesday, rainfall totals of up to 120 mm have been observed across the upper Moonie River catchment, causing river and creek level rises. Minor flooding is occurring at Flinton, where moderate flooding is expected to develop from around Tuesday afternoon. Further downstream, moderate flooding is likely at Nindigully on Friday.
CONDAMINE BALONNE
The Condamine Balonne catchment has had up to 140mm across the catchment.. The Balonne River is on the flood watch.
BORDER RIVERS
No immediate concerns. Limited rainfall in the catchment. Flood watch cancelled.
WEATHER FORECAST
Further showers and storms, with possible heavy falls, are forecast for the remainder of Tuesday into Wednesday. This situation is being closely monitored, and warnings will be updated as necessary.
ROADS UPDATE
• Barwon Highway is closed at Talwood (no ETA on when it will reopen);
• Moonie Highway may close without notice with rising flood waters at Claude Bowhay Bridge
• Carnarvon Highway near Nindigully may close without notice due to rising flood waters over coming days
