LOCAL DISASTER MANAGEMENT GROUP UPDATE
Re: ADVICE NO. 11
Date: 4pm 9 February 2024
This is an update from the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) for the Balonne Shire. Travellers and residents are asked to prepare now, stay informed and monitor conditions and where possible avoid travelling into areas that will be most affected.
No significant rainfall has been recorded in the last few days and no significant rainfall is forecast for the next few days across the Balonne River catchment.
The main flood peak along the Balonne River is approaching Surat, where moderate flooding is occurring. Further downstream, minor flooding may develop at St George early next week.
Flows will extend further down the Balonne River in the coming days and weeks. Peak forecasts will be refined as upstream peaks are observed.
Vector spraying will be undertaken in flood impacted areas throughout the Shire from the 9th to 15th February and residents should check the Council’s Facebook for further details.
BALONNE RIVER
River level rises are expected along the Balonne River downstream of Surat to Beardmore Dam.
The Balonne River at Warroo is below the minor flood level (9.00 metres) at 6.64 metres and rising slowly. River level rises are expected but the Balonne River at Warroo is likely to remain below the minor flood level through to early next week.
Beardmore Dam will reach capacity this afternoon and gates will likely open at 3pm to release a moderate flow through Jack Taylor Weir and below. Further details about expected peaks will be provided once upstream peaks are observed.
NINDIGULLY
No river level observations are currently available for the Moonie River at Nindigully. However, based on the nearby automatic gauge, the river level is likely to be above the moderate flood level and steady. The Moonie River at Nindigully may fall below the moderate flood level (3.00 m) during the weekend.
THALLON
The Moonie River at Thallon Bridge is currently at 4.99 metres and rising, nearing the major flood level. The Moonie River at Thallon Bridge is likely to peak just above the major flood level (5.00 metres) Friday afternoon. The river level is likely to remain around the major flood level overnight Friday and into Saturday.
Council has removed the levee bank in Thallon. Crews are onsite and monitoring closely.
Local crews in Thallon will be coordinating rubbish collection whilst Thallon is isolated.
