Re: ADVICE NO. 1

Date: 2pm 5 April 2024

This is an update from the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) for the Balonne Shire.  Travellers and residents are asked to prepare now, stay informed and monitor conditions and where possible avoid travelling into areas that will be most affected.

The Bureau of Meteorology advised the LDMG that rainfall is now expected to ease in the Shire, however more rainfall is expected in the Moonie River and Balonne River catchments over the next few days.

MOONIE RIVER CATCHMENT

Rainfall totals of 20-50 mm were recorded across the Upper Moonie River catchment in the 24 hours to 1:00 pm Thursday. Further Showers and thunderstorms, tending to rain at times will become more widespread for the remainder of Thursday and Friday.

Moonie River to Flinton:

Minor flooding may occur along the Moonie River to Flinton.

The Moonie River at Flinton is currently at 1.07 metres and steady, below the minor flood level (3.00 m). The Moonie River at Flinton may reach the minor flood level Friday morning. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.

BALONNE RIVER CATCHMENT

Rainfall totals up to 63 mm have been recorded across the Condamine and Balonne catchments in the 24 hours to 9 am Friday. This has caused renewed river level rises and will likely bring renewed minor flooding to parts of the catchments.

The chance of showers and thunderstorms is forecast across parts of the Condamine and Balonne catchments over the next few days. Further river level rises are possible across the catchment over the weekend. The situation is being closely monitored and warnings will be updated accordingly.

Balonne River to Surat:

Minor flooding is likely along the Balonne River to Surat.

No river level observations are currently available at the Surat gauge. However, based on the nearby automatic gauge, the river level is estimated to be below the minor flood level (5.00 m) and rising. The Balonne River at Surat is likely to exceed the minor flood level (5.00 m) overnight Friday into Saturday.

Balonne River downstream of Surat to Beardmore Dam:

River levels are elevated along the Balonne River downstream of Surat to Beardmore Dam.

Maranoa River:

Minor flooding may occur along the Maranoa River.

There are no current observations for the Maranoa River at Mitchell, however based on the nearby automatic gauge, it is expected that the river level at Mitchell is below the minor flood level (2.00 m) and steady. The Maranoa River at Mitchell may reach the minor flood level (2.00 m) overnight Friday into Saturday.

The Maranoa River at Springfield is currently at 4.60 metres and rising, below the minor flood level (6.00 m). The Maranoa River at Springfield may exceed the minor flood level (6.00 m) during Saturday.
